Zydrate Anatomy Lyrics The low respiratory tract consists of the trachea, the lungs, the bronchi and bronchioles, the breathing bronchioles and alveoli. Often the trachea begins the lower respiratory system anatomy, consisting of 16 to twenty incomplete 'C' shaped hyaline cartilage rings atop of every other. There are three levels of tissue which block off the trachea and cartilaginous rings; the outer consists of fibrous and elastic tissue which usually enclose the cartilage. The center consists of the cartilage along with smooth muscle that gloves around the trachea. The inner coating is lined with columnar cells (epithelium) which contain mucus secreting goblet cells.
The actual respiratory functions of the trachea are to warm and humidify air, to expel mucus with unwanted particles and dirt (through cilia on the internal lining cells wafting mucus upwards towards the larynx wherever it can be either swallowed or even coughed up), to provide a coughing reflex (nerve endings inside the larynx, trachea, and bronchi stimulate a cough response when irritated), and provide assistance and patency to the air passage (through the C-shaped collagenous cartilage providing support to keep the actual airway open but also permit flexibility for movement in addition to swallowing food).
